Issues

The Commonweal Institute is a multi-issue communication organization. We address both short-term, immediate issues as well as long-term issues that may require years to achieve.

The Commonweal Institute's core principles serve as a guide for the selection of issues and the positions that are taken on issues. Different segments of the general public differ in the issues that they consider most relevant to themselves. By identifying and then communicating a moderate-progressive perspective about the issues particularly relevant for specific audiences, we strive to motivate each of these audiences to take an active role in our democracy, and most particularly to vote. Taken in the aggregate, this helps to change the political environment to be more supportive of a broad moderate-to-progressive agenda.

At this time the issues with which we can deal, as a new think tank and communication organization, are limited by our resources. The issues on which we are currently spending the greatest amount of time are:

  • Creating progressive infrastructure
  • Voting and Elections
  • Promoting public education
  • The importance of a robust tort system
  • Environment & Sustainability
