Testimonials

"It's always good to put your brain in gear before you put your mouth in motion. The folks at the Commonweal Institute do the heavy mental lifting so agitators like me can arm ourselves on the front lines of the ideological battles taking place every day in America. For too long progressives have walked fearful of their shadows, whimpering and whining about what's wrong and fighting amongst themselves over crumbs. With the help of the Commonweal Institute, that time is over."

-- Jim Hightower, National radio commentator, writer and public speaker

Announcing our new Fellows and Progressive Op-Ed Program

With the goal of providing an opportunity for local and national news outlets to publish opinion and commentary from a progressive political perspective, the Commonweal Institute will produce and distribute weekly op-ed columns starting July 1, 2009.

A new lineup of Commonweal Institute Fellows, public intellectuals who have organically developed large audiences and authority in their fields through their blogs, publications and academic work, will write the columns on a rotating basis.

The op-ed columns will be posted at Commonweal Institute's Uncommon Denominator Blog and will be available for reprint free of copyright restrictions, with the only requirement that the authors be identified as Commonweal Institute Fellows.

The spark for this program came from a Commonweal Institute supporter seeking an alternative to the conservative and libertarian perspectives regularly featured in their local newspaper’s op-ed page.

Letter from the Executive Director: Operating in Obama's Washington

Barry Kendall at the Jefferson MemorialWhen Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner announced his proposal to bail out the banking sector a couple of weeks ago, people were disappointed with its content -- and shocked by what seemed like an obvious procedural fumble. First of all, taking the stage during the height of the Congressional tussle over the stimulus bill was a mysterious bit of timing. Second, the so-called “plan” was little more than a set of general guidelines -- basically a rehash of the original TARP bailout passed last fall under President Bush -- accompanied by a price tag that ran into the trillions. Critics blanched, Wall Street plunged, and many suspected a rookie mistake from the new White House.

Today, though, as I look at the trajectory of the subsequent debate, I am not so sure. I was in Washington, DC, when the bailout plan was announced.

Mike Lux Event in San Francisco

On February 15, 2009, Mike Lux energized an audience of some 75 progressives at the Mercury Lounge in San Francisco.  Referring to his new book, The Progressive Revolution: How the Best in America Came to Be, Lux put events of the tumultuous recent past in historical context.  He spoke about the conflict taking place since the time of the nation’s founding between progressive advances for the common good and conservative retrenchments that favor the wealthy.

Lux made the case that this is a time in which progressives have a great opportunity to address the serious problems our country faces: the economy, global warming, the health care system, immigration reform, workers’ rights, public financing of campaigns, and telecommunications policy.   He cautioned, however, that President Obama, whose style is to act as the "Conciliator-in-Chief”, will not be able do this alone.

Wrongful Conviction Radio Conversation

Radio Host Peter B. Collins

Green960's Peter B. Collins

Dr. Katherine Forrest

Dr. Katherine Forrest

On January 9, Peter B. Collins talked with Prof. C. Ronald Huff of UC Irvine and Dr. Katherine Forrest of the Commonweal Institute on his Green 960 radio show. The topic was wrongful conviction, a subject on which Professor Huff has considerable expertise and has written several books. Dr. Forrest discussed how problems in our justice system impact single individuals, presenting as an example the case of James Anderson, who at age 54 has been incarcerated on death row at San Quentin for over half his life, for a crime he says he did not commit.

Listen to the podcast discussion of the factors that can lead to serious miscarriages of justice.

Talking Politics Training Now Available on Video

Since 2004, the Commonweal Institute has been conducting “Talking Politics with People Unlike Ourselves” workshops in California. The workshops have been popular with grassroots activists and ordinary citizens interested in being more effective in discussing politics with family members, neighbors, work colleagues, and/or strangers.  An 82-minute video based on one of the workshops is now available on our website.

Dr. Katherine Forrest, who developed the workshop content and appears in the video, says, “More than ever, Americans are seeking ways to talk about politics without getting into arguments. They recognize the need to heal the divides that have developed during the past few decades, so that we can work together to deal with the problems our country is facing.”
